North San Diego Business Chamber Launches Sustainability Advisory Council to Promote Environmentally Responsible Growth

The Council Serves to Inform and Promote Environmental Stewardship in the Region

San Diego, Calif. – Oct. 11, 2023 – The North San Diego Business Chamber held its inaugural Sustainability Advisory Council meeting on Oct. 4, signaling a profound commitment to advancing sustainable practices in the San Diego business community and broader regions. The Council joins the Chamber's lineup of 5 total advisory councils designed to encourage members to participate in the dialogue and direction of the region.

On the first Wednesday of every month, the Sustainability Advisory Council will bring together elected officials, community leaders, Chamber Members, and subject matter experts to collaborate, inform, and educate each other on sustainable practices, initiatives, and policies in a virtual setting. Through a circular economic approach, the Council aims to tackle the region's current environmental challenges while continuing to drive responsible economic growth.

Councilmembers will influence and shape the Chamber's official stance on sustainability-related matters and policy recommendations by engaging in open and constructive discussions on the following key areas:

  • Environmental Stewardship: The Council will work to share and develop strategies that encourage businesses to reduce their ecological footprint, promote energy efficiency, waste reduction, and other fiscally responsible eco-friendly actions.

  • Green Business Development: The Council will actively support the creation and expansion of green businesses and industries in areas such as renewable energy, green technology, and eco-friendly products and services.

  • Climate Action and Resilience: Advocating for fiscally responsible policies that mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, support climate adaptation measures, and prepare businesses for legislative initiatives in relation to climate change.

  • Circular Economy: Central to the Council's mission is encouraging the adoption of circular economy principles, including practices that reduce waste, promote recycling and upcycling, and encourage product design with the entire life cycle of a product or service in mind.

  • Sustainable Infrastructure: The Council will advocate for investments in transportation, energy, and building systems that promote environmental responsibility and long-term sustainability.

The first Council meeting brought together senior leadership representatives from iconic organizations, including HUBB - SeaWorld Research Institute, HP, San Diego Gas & Electric, Republic Services, San Diego Community Power, and Petco. Attendees enjoyed an informative presentation by Colonel Thomas "Marty" Bedell, Commanding Officer of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, and Mick Wasco, Installation Energy Manager for MCAS Miramar. Col. Bedell and Wasco presented the Station's robust daily sustainability practices and highlighted the Marine Corps' immense dedication to energy resilience as well as the Station’s journey to becoming one of the most energy-forward defense installations in the nation (MCICOM).

The North San Diego Business Chamber looks forward to uniting environmentally conscious industry experts again at the next Council meeting on Nov. 1. Those interested in becoming a voting council member may complete this short form. All Chamber Members and their employees are invited to join the meetings, participate in the discussion, and become a catalyst for a greener tomorrow.
